Psalm 49
Today I read Psalm 49, and what an enlightening chapter it was!A good reminder for those who trust in the Lord's salvation, and an eye-opener for those yet to come to know Him.
David's trust in the Lord and intimacy with Him is just amazing. Here he speaks of the futility of trusting in oneself, because people, no matter how great or small, will all eventually leave this earth and everything they have. The question is, where will we go? I think all of us have asked that question, whether we admit it or not. That is an indication, isn't it, of something that will happen beyond death...
David describes a man who trusts in his own strength as 'like the beasts that perish'.
v7-9: 'No man can redeem the life of another or give God a ransom for him-the ransom for a life is costly, no payment is ever enough-- that he should live on forever and not see decay'.
Then it continues:
v13 'This is the fate of those who trust in themselves, and of their followers, who approve their sayings.'
But look what David says next:
v15 'But God will redeem my life from the grave; He will surely take me to Himself.'
This is God's promise...not that we will never face death (unless we get raptured, which i would really like), but that He will surely redeem us from it and bring us into His presence to dwell with Him forevermore. What an incredible promise.
Only God has the power to do this, and i wonder why people still doubt Him and choose to believe in themselves, when they know for sure that they will someday perish.
I guess another thing that struck me about this chapter is that David's intimacy with God allowed him to have that assurance that God would 'take him to Himself'. It is so important to develop a close relationship with God, because God desires to tell us the secrets of His heart. Hey, only our closest friends get to know our secrets. If David had never been close to God, he would never have known that someday he would be with Him for all eternity...and how much peace and joy he might have missed out, always wondering where he'd be after death and always facing the depression that comes with the idea that life is meaningless!
To all who read this, i just want to say that your life is so precious that no man can redeem it...nor all the riches of this world combined.
But Jesus loves you, and He's paid the price, because only He has what it takes to redeem you. Best plan is to trust in Him now. hehe...
